A 404 page refers to error number 404 (which means that the requested page is not on the server).
This is very important for sites that have been redesigned, and equally important for handling typos.
Imagine if you take the time to send out an email boasting about your new crop of goats for sale,
but you misspell the word boer in your url. People who click on your link will get a standard page not
found (if you don't have a custom 404 page) and they probably won't try to find the error.
With a custom 404 page, you can at least offer to direct them to the correct page. This is something
I do for free.
If you want to see my 404 page, click here. I have a javascript
textarea that lists out some somewhat humorous dialog. |
